May 27, 2025—The SAA Council met virtually earlier this month for its spring meeting. The Council has a few announcements to share:
As part of the Consent Agenda, the following Council Interim Actions were ratified by Council (0525-II-A-CouncilInterim):
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the recommendation by the Executive Committee to provide one year of SAA membership for workers impacted by the cancellation of federal grants/funds. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the section led town hall to support membership driven initiatives like these; that an SAA staff member be a part of the meetings being held on town halls; section held meetings will submit a short report that will be used to inform the association-wide town halls to be held in April and May. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the funding request by the SAA Membership Committee in the amount of $400 be included in SAA’s FY 2026 budget to support the annual cost of Appointlet and meeting take aways for membership. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the funding request by the SAA Native American Archives Section that funding in the amount of $15,505 be included in SAA’s FY 2026 budget to support SAA Annual Meeting travel scholarships and memberships for Tribal archivists and memory workers. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of a statement on the media reports concerning destruction of records: SAA Statement on Media Reports Concerning Records Destruction. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the VP recommendations by the Executive Committee to fill the role of VP/President-Elect for the remaining term of FY25. Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Council’s approval of the recommendation by the Executive Committee to provide one year of SAA membership for federal archives workers and records managers impacted by federal terminations. Approved.
The following Executive Committee Interim Actions were ratified by Council (0525-II-B-ExecComInterim):
- Ratified the SAA Executive Committee’s approval of the posting of the SAA Fellows' petition that states, “SAA Fellows responded to the dismissal of AOTUS.” Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Executive Committee’s endorsement of a letter in support of Senator Ron Wyden’s February 25, 2025, letter urging the Federal Trade Commission to protect consumers in the digital marketplace. Did Not Pass.
- Ratified the SAA Executive Committee’s approval of distributing the “American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) initiative which launched a new research project, the National Survey of History Practitioners, to better understand who works at history organizations, how they are compensated, and how they feel about their work.” Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Executive Committee’s approval to endorse the AHA statement, titled “Historians Defend the Smithsonian.” Approved.
- Ratified the SAA Executive Committee’s approval of the statement via NHA on NEH, which encourages SAA members to support the protection of the National Endowment for Humanities and adds SAA’s signature to the National Humanities Alliance (NHA)-authored statement regarding NEH. Approved.
The Council discussed or acted on the following:
- The Diversity Committee discussed concerns and entered a dialog to better understand SAA’s current strategies and decision-making process regarding advocacy efforts. (0525-III-B-Diversity)
- Approved the Governance Manual Edits. (0525-III-D-1-GovMan)
- Discussed the Graduate Archival Education Subcommittee agenda item to revise the committee’s charge. The Council asked GAES to provide further clarifications prior to approval. (0525-IV-A-GAES)
- Approved the rewritten SAA Membership Committee charge to increase the number of Membership Committee members from 6 to 9–10. (0525-IV-B-MembCom)
- Approved the TS-GRD request for an extension. (0525-IV-C-TS-GRD)
- Approved the Standards Committee agenda item. (0525-IV-D-Standards) That the SAA Council approve the assignment of responsibility for maintenance of the Guidelines for Standardized Holdings Counts and Measures for Archival Repositories and Special Collections Libraries to the Collection Management Section of SAA.
The next Council Meeting will be held August 24, 2025. Agenda items and reports are due by July 17, 2025 to saagovernance@archivists.org. You can register for that meeting here.
Please note that in an effort to give Council members enough time to review the documents before a Council meeting, documents will be due 5 weeks before a Council meeting. Documents received after posted deadlines will either be moved to the next Council meeting or considered as an interim action after the scheduled Council meeting.
